Today was our first day going to the schools for the ESL tutoring and going for motorized rickshaw rides. This morning was another hurry up and wait moment. We ate breakfast at 8 but didn't leave until 10. After a fast and bumpy rickshaw ride we arrived at the first school, St. Peter's Higher Secondary School (HSS). We were welcomed with various long speeches about the English language. Hopefully tomorrow we will be able to interact with the students more. After watching a couple dances and a skit they performed, we came back to the house, ate a wonderful lunch (with lots of Indian fry bread), and rested until we left to visit the next school. The second school we are tutoring is called Ithithanam Higher Secondary School. We were greeted with a warm welcome of the traditional bindis and roses. We stepped right into the ESL tutoring and talked with the students by exchanging questions and answers. Then after a quick turn around we headed off to the tutoring center in the clinic to help the neighborhood kids with their English homework. To finish the day we had our second traditional Indian dance lesson and ate a delicious dinner.

  1. I still love hearing of your adventures! Love the camel ride on the beach yesterday--can't wait to see pics!!
When will you ever get to do that again? So glad you are taking advantage of these opportunities!
And so great you met the kids at the school where the filtration system was installed--how wonderful to put faces with those whose lives you are impacting! That was so lovely that they baked you a cake! I'm sure they appreciated the pencils as well--if you don't have much that can be a precious possession!
Keep the blogs coming! Love to hear of your experiences!! Stay safe, get/stay healthy, and keep taking it all in! xoxox

  2. Nice to hear that you are helping kids learn English. We actually have lots of youth and adults here in Portland who speak English as a second language so perhaps, if you enjoy your experience you can do some tutoring when you return.

How did the cricket go? Did you have a wicket good time? Sorry for that.

We miss seeing you and hearing your voices (hint hint).

  3. After day three of Winter term, things have settled down and we are in the groove of yet another twelve week adventure. It's 28 degrees here!

It's been fun to read your daily diary. Looking forward to pictures of the Ithith school and any new lifeforms you may have encountered.

Be safe. Hello to Daisy, L and Miss Laly. Laurie

  4. Arrived back to Portland to below freezing temperature. A lot different from our hot days in Kerala. All the bugs are frozen her so no more bug spray.

Enjoy the time you have with the school and students. I know you can get so much out of it if you take the effort. It will be a great experience for everyone. Also, good luck on your practice for the cultural dance. I am sure it will great to share with the community.

  5. All,

Made it back to cold freezing weather. Do not have to worry about bug spray since all of the bugs are frozen.

I am hoping you are enjoying the school activities and meeting students who are thrilled to meet and learn with you. The experience can be life long if you invest your energy in interaction and taking risks.

Looking forward to more stories from your work.
