Greetings from Delhi!
It's about 8 pm on Monday evening here and Karl and I are killing time while we wait for Nathan to arrive from Portland. In case you didn't know, as captain of the now state champion Riverdale Maverick soccer team, Nathan had to stay an extra day in Portland to lead the team to victory. Everyone else is already asleep after an exciting first day in India.
Our guide CV, met us for breakfast in the hotel and everyone was ready in time and enthusiastic to begin out first adventure. We headed to the Red Fort (just for a drive by ñ closed on Mondays) and on to the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque). Traffic was so bad and the main entrance was closed so we improvised and hopped out of the bus headed into Old Delhi on foot to walk to the mosque. Everyone was thrilled with the sights, sounds and smells of the markets of Old Delhi. We arrived at the mosque and enjoyed it's peace and quite after the tumult of Old Delhi.
Our bus had to park some distance from the mosque so we hired 8 bicycle rickshaws and travelled though traffic and roundabouts out of Old Delhi. You'll have to wait a few days to see the photos and videos from this memorable excursion since only Patrick and Lucy had cameras with them and they are asleep now.
We headed to the Raj Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna river to see the Mahatma Gandhi memorial. Then on to see the India Gate. Nearby we stopped for a late lunch. Everyone filled themselves with a delicious Indian meal.
We pushed on to our final destination for the day Humayun's Tomb - beautiful example of Mogul architecture. From here we walked around as the sun began it's decent. The day was relatively cool and we had wonderful afternoon sun for photographs.
